ARCADIA – Going toe to toe with some of the nation's top milers on the season's most prestigious stage, Trabuco Hills junior Jantzen Oshier confidently displayed his own credentials as an elite miler. Oshier forged a small lead over the final lap and held off the hard-charging field to win the invitational mile at the Arcadia Invitational on Saturday night at Arcadia High. "I finally saw the opportunity in the last 500 meters, the gap opened up, and it worked out in the end," Oshier said. "This was the one goal I set for myself in track, and to do it is cool." After a tight cluster of runners battled for the lead over the first three laps of the race, Oshier sprinted to the lead at the start of the bell lap. Holding a small lead down the final straight-away, Oshier (4:12.80) held off the challenge of Anthony Kostelac of Albemarie High in Virginia (4:12.90) and Elias Gedyon of Loyola (4:13.39) to claim the victory with second-best mile time in the nation this season. For the second year in a row, Mater Dei senior Michael Woepse won the pole vault, claiming the competition with a clearance of 17 feet. That mark is tied for the fourth-best clearance in meet history.
"Arcadia is the biggest meet of the year and to win it is an honor," Woepse said. In the 400 invitational, Oxford Academy junior Jonathan Berry-Smith hung with the race leaders throughout most of the competition, coming in fourth with a time 48.98 seconds. JSerra senior Harrison Steed finished fourth overall in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 9 inches. Orange Lutheran senior Mason Hahn cleared 6-7 to finish eighth. Mater Dei junior Sam Barkley was the top county finisher in the 300 hurdles invitational, crossing the finish line fifth in a time of 39.02. Before suffering a leg injury during one of his attempts in the final round of the long jump, Dana Hills senior and state leader Devin Harrison finished fifth with a mark of 22-81/2. In the boys distance medley relay, Vista Murrieta (10:11.26) rallied in the final 50 meters of the race to edge Dana Hills (10:11.46). Trabuco Hills senior and county leader Percylla Nared placed second in the girls seeded 100, finishing in a wind-legal time of 12.07. Capistrano Valley sophomore Gianna Lowery (12.27) was sixth. Foothill senior and county leader Sierra Vega (10:42.14) was fifth in the 3,200 invitational. Corona del Mar's distance-medley relay team finished second in a time of 11:59.03. Woodbridge junior and county leader Gabrielle Scott (56.22) was second in the seeded 400, while Trabuco Hills senior Monica Todd (43.73) finished third in the seeded 300 hurdles. El Toro junior Brad Bolton finished sixth overall in the shot put (56-6 1/2). In the girls seeded 200, Capistrano Valley's Lowery (25.27) finished fifth, and Nared (25.31) finished in sixth.
